New Study Reveals Over 750 Oil Slicks in Mediterranean
A recent analysis conducted between July 2020 and January 2024 has uncovered a disturbing trend in the Mediterranean Sea, identifying 757 oil slicks that cover a vast area of 1.9 million hectares. The data, derived from SkyTruth's Cerulean platform, raises significant environmental concerns:Read the report
Findings:
75% of these incidents were linked to oil and chemical tankers.
Six flag states, including the Marshall Islands, Panama, Malta, Singapore, Liberia, and Togo, were associated with over 60% of these slicks through identifiable vessels.
Six specific vessels repeatedly contributed to the pollution, operating under the flags of Egypt, Hong Kong, Panama, Russia, the Marshall Islands, and Liberia.
The Greek exclusive economic zone (EEZ) witnessed the most considerable number of oil slicks, totaling 182, followed closely by Italy with 163 and Egypt with 102.
Two critical marine protected areas (MPAs)—the Mediterranean Cetacean Migration Corridor and the Pelagos Sanctuary for the Conservation of Marine Mammals—experienced significant impacts within their regions.
This comprehensive study underscores the critical need for more stringent regulations and improved maritime practices to protect the Mediterranean. The sea is not only a biodiverse marine habitat but also a vital component of regional economic stability, influencing 22 countries and encompassing 87 ports.
Addressing these environmental challenges is essential to preserving our seas for future generations.
This commitment to environmental protection aligns with Marinfloc's mission to ensure clean water is discharged overboard, supporting sustainable maritime activities.
