A clean water tank where treated water is stored is a good solution for vessels that are often in restricted areas where overboard discharge of bilge water is prohibited. However, storing treated water in a clean water holding tank can result in rapid bacterial growth especially when the water contains a high level of nutrients in combination with temperature above 30 degrees C. Bacteria and microorganisms can discolor the water and cause the oil content meter readings above 15 PPM so the water cannot be discharged and needs to be re treated by the bilge water separator.

The UV-unit continuously circulates the water in the clean bilge holding tank and disinfects the microorganisms so the water can be discharged overboard without challenges when the vessel enters an area where discharge is allowed.
